Research Bursary
Department of History Lancaster University
North Craven Heritage Trust Bursary
To further its aim of encouraging the production and publication
of high-quality research on the North Craven district, the North Craven
Heritage Trust (NCHT) is offering a bursary to support a master's degree
student of history at Lancaster University for the period when the student
will be researching and writing up a dissertation based on original research
relevant to the North Craven district.
Following discussion between NCHT and the Department of History
on 19 May 2003, the following parameters and arrangements were agreed:
- NCHT will provide a bursary of £1000 towards the tuition fees
of a student in their final year of registration on an MA scheme in
the Department of History. The bursary will be paid direct to the University
in two installments. In addition, NCHT will re-imburse the student for
the cost of agreed research expenses up to a maximum of £500.
- The bursary will be open to all students registered for the degree
of MA in the Department of History during the year in which they complete
their master's dissertation. It will be awarded by competition and will
be determined on the quality of both the research proposal for the dissertation
and the student's previous record of achievement.
- The award will be made, and the topic of study agreed, by the directors
of the MA in Local & Regional History and the Chairs of the NCHT
and of the NCHT Publications Sub-committee. Any historical projects
relating to the North Craven district will be considered. North Craven
is defined as those parts of Craven District in the county of North
Yorkshire falling within the ancient parishes of Thornton-in-Lonsdale,
Bentham, Clapham, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Giggleswick, Long Preston,
Gargrave and Kirkby Malham.
- The winner of the bursary must be prepared to present the results
of the research in the public domain, by publication, in a form accessible
to the members of the Trust and the general public. He or she will also
be asked to give a lecture on the subject of his or her dissertation
to the Trust.
- The bursary will be a pilot scheme in the first instance, consisting
of single award for the academic year 2004-05.
- In order to encourage high-quality applicants for the award in 2004,
the University will undertake targeted publicity for the Diploma and
MA in Local & Regional History, with a view to increasing enrolments
from the North Craven area in October 2003. NCHT will circulate details
of the schemes (to be provided by the University) in their forthcoming
mailing.
