After indifferent weather, the sun came out on a frosty day to give an almost ‘springlike’ feeling for the first walk of the 1999 season.

We started walking along the banks of the Ribble towards Stackhouse, admiring the excellent views and natural beauty of the riverside. The hamlet of Stackhouse was soon reached, and we were fortunate that Pauline Harrison had agreed to give some details of the history of this extremely old settlement, which was most informative, as little has been written about Stackhouse.

Our route led us to higher ground in the direction of Knights Stainforth, passing through innumerable stiles till we eventually reached the turning point where we passed under the road to reach the banks of the Ribble. Excellent views of Langcliffe were to be seen, and along the riverbank as we returned to Settle, there was much of ornithological interest. We returned back to our starting point just as the sun was setting, feeling better for an excursion, which was to be the forerunner of many other enjoyable walks during the year.
