Eldroth - Israel and the Kettlesbecks

2 February 2003

Leader - Maureen Ellis

Starting from Eldroth Village Hall we went up the fellside in a southerly direction, the path taking us to the farms on the way; Black Bank and Howith and then turning west to Butterfield Gap and going as far as Israel. Jill Sykes had given me information from the Northallerton Records Office ( Christenings, Marriages and Burials - Clapham Parish), on this strangely named farm. It is a corruption of Jeerawhill and five years later in 1707 it was referred to as Joe Raw Hill. After 1707 it was always known as Israel.

We then turned north and went down hill through the various Kettlesbecks and crossed the railway line below Cragg Bank to return to our starting point.
